IPL3 - Divinations from the Cloud

With plays about healthcare and apathy, intimacy as occupation, and communication as battleground, our third Playlab was vibrating with  messages from the digital culture while still mining the reality of human experience.  We danced, we drummed, there was an awful lot of blood. . . and with this final installment, we now turn our attention to Fidgital Spring (at the Figment Project June 8 and 9), our Solstice Bash (June 21), and our Summer Residency.  So much more to come! IPL2 -- Our Second Instant Play Lab

Holy mackerel. With record attendance, and all your positive energy and work, our second Instant Play Lab was another success.  This time SIX new short(ish) plays by six playwrights came to life.  From the dystopian corporatocracy of Expo 32, to the lessons about context that a couple of splendid snapping turtles taught us. . . From fearless dancing to forced dieting . . . Egyptian Elevator Cults to the unbelievably inspiring addition of live musicians (more please!), we had a raucous, wonderful, creative good time.

Then there were the five home-made soups, Carrie's amazing breads, and after the show we had an uplifting and inspiring meeting and looked the the future. 

A big thank you to everyone who was involved and who attended.  More like this to come! 

Reboot Season Opener Party 11/12/12

Our Reboot Party with its Instant Play Lab was a total success.  Five new seven-minute plays by five playwrights came to life.  You want drunk pilots?  We got drunk pilots squaring off with cocky medics.  You want subway drama?  We got one of the most true-to-life and brilliant crazy subway rants you'll hear all year.  You want bondage?  How about bound to a maypole?  Lifestyle?  We asked your pedicurist what she REALLY thinks, and heard from two therapeutic rag dolls, Anx and Dep.

The cake was delicious, the wine flowed, and after the show we had an uplifting and inspiring meeting and looked the the future.

Second Movement Rehearsal for Unlawful Gatherings

We’re making an all-new,  super bad-ass piece for this summer’s
Figment Project!

So we’re adding to our small group of trusted, creative, committed actors (and thinkers) who meet regularly to collaboratively warm up, play, create and write material.

We are seeking highly physical, imaginative actors with an interest in collaborative theatre-making.  We are open to all ages, ethnicity, and body types. We’re particularly interested in performers with strength in Improv, dance and movement, and any crazy musical talent.

Interested in particle physics? war theory?  hats?  container gardening? video games? micro-loans? the properties of water? Want to play a 60 year-old stripper? an expert on the history of the American Horse? an evil kindergarten teacher? a Republican climate scientist? a talk-show host with PTSD? 

You know you want to.

Auditions will be the first week of April.  Equity and Non-equity welcome.

Performers must be available twice a week in April and May, and more regularly in June through the festival dates (June 10-12).  Once you collaborate with Hook & Eye, you're part of the team, and on the short-list for future productions, we're looking for long-time collaborators!

The Figment Project, Summer on Governors Island

Hook & Eye Theater is currently working on developing an interactive, audience-directed short play as an entry in this summer's Figment Project called YOU AGAIN??

Held on Governors Island in the Hudson River between Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Figment Project is in it's fifth year.  From their website:

"FIGMENT is a forum for the creation and display of participatory and interactive art by emerging artists across disciplines. FIGMENT began in July 2007 as a free, one-day participatory arts event on Governors Island in New York Harbor with over 2,600 participants. Since then, FIGMENT has grown significantly each year?in number of projects, duration, participants, volunteers, fundraising capability, exhibitions, locations, overall level of commitment and participation, and public support."

Our piece will show multiple times daily from June 10 through June 12 for thousands of audience members/art lovers somewhere on the green hills and historic buildings of one of the city's newest public spaces!

Unlawful Gatherings - Second Draft !!

After a tremendous(ly gratifying) effort last summer -- before we lost Emily to the Actor's Theatre of Louisville for a spell -- we had the first public reading of our first full-length piece. 

Set in a dead woman's apartment in Marble Hill Unlawful Gatherings unpacks the story of Katja, an immigrant, a mother, a revolutionary, a hoarder.  The story is told by those she hardly knew, the young inhabitants of her building, as they dig through the detritus of a life unobserved.

The actors share the responsibility of playing all the characters that populate Katja's story, and most of the scenery too.

We're headed into a rehearsal period this early spring armed with a revised and re-arranged "script" and a modified cast list (simplify, simplify) and we're so f-ing excited!

How come?

We believe that theater requires the whole performer, not just text and types.  At it's best, it's irreverent, dangerous, joyful, brave, ridiculous, passionate.  And ultimately a wholly different experience from other forms of entertainment.

We are an ever-changing ensemble of theater-makers, musicians and artists.   Our task is original work.  Our process is consistently redefined.  It's go time.
